Vending Machine History and Use

A vending machine is a coin-operated object by which many items may be vended. Vending machines are not taken for coin-operated amusement games or music radios.

The first known widespread employment of vending machines came early in the 18th century in England, where coin-operated “honour boxes” were used to vend snuff and tobacco.

These boxes were also used from the British-American communities at a later point in the century. The first known practical, commercial employment of vending machines was in the United States circa 1888, when they were exploited to expand the retail of chewing gum in places where gum sales were not possible otherwise, specifically the waiting areas of the NYC elevated railway.

The US industry was limited mainly to penny-candy retail til 1926, when the modern era of automatic retailing was opened by the establishment of cigarette vending machines. The original soft-drink vending machine appeared around 1937.

As the United States began its defense strength prior to its position into the second World War, plant committees estimated that employees could not continue at full function for 10, 12, or more hours if not provided a lunch recess, and vending machines were seen to be the most expedient process of giving food and beverages.

During the 1940s to ’50s the vending machine market was focused in plants and factories, and by the end of that time, vending devices were being employed to sell a larger variety of freshly provided along with prepackaged foods to replace and complement original in-plant food providing facilities.

Refrigeration was added to vending machines to retail bottled soft drinks. The applicability of vending devices to vend items at comparable costs around the clock without any regard to schedules is in modern times globally understood.

The business has moved beyond plants and factories, and devices are variably set in schools, colleges and universities, recreation centres, health care facilities, offices, and the like.

Typically, vending machines are provided by businesses (operators) that own and put vending devices on locations owned by others. Those companies provide whole maintenance and care, as well as products for retail, typically without a fee to the owners of the premises other than maybe a servicing fee.Vending devices have been utilized in Great Britain, continental Europe, and Scandinavia from the 1880s, at which point they were used to provide confectionery or tobacco products.

In current times, the vending machine business in those countries has closely reflected the history of vending machines in the States.

Vending in Japan originated in earnest during the 1960s and developed enthusiastically into an iconic aspect in Japan’s distribution process.

Movies, Books, Politicians the Water Bottle is Under Siege

Bring a plastic water bottle at your own hazard; the pressure of popular view is turning against you. From popular rating documentaries, to books and campaigns, the hot topic on the soapbox is the menace that is bottled water and the waste the industry forces.

The processing, transporting and waste of water in petrochemical plastic bottles eats up tremendous quantities of water as well as energy, and pumps out large quantities of greenhouse gases and waste.

Director of the new documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig says “1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second – that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The Tapped team are plugging the movie with their across-America roadshow, collecting pledges from people to take down their water bottle waste and exchanging their old plastic water bottle for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.

Another short film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. From Annie Leonard of the well-received ‘The Story of Stuff’, this animated film shows the methodology that goes into tricking Americans into wasting around five hundred million bottles of water every week, instead of a few cents cost for a drink from the tap. See this animation on You Tube.

In her book ‘Bottlemania’, investigator Elizabeth Royte investigates one of the biggest marketing cons of the last century and gives a sudden environmental alarm bell. She details the red flags we must at some point respond to. Who has ownership of the water supply? What could happen when a bottled-water factory seizes your town’s water supply? Is the water coming out of the tap absolutely safe? What really is the environmental price of making, transporting and waste of every plastic water bottle?

Politicians from all around the international community are beginning to realise that they have to take responsibility – markedly when the buildings where they work are high consumers of bottled water. How often do we view a politician in a meeting drinking from a water bottle. Surely they might find a water glass in Parliament House.

Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, claimed “Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.”

In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first society of Australia to prevent the sale of bottled water. Around 60 cities in the US and some towns in Canada and the United Kingdom have lately ceased the spending of taxpayer money on bottled water.

No doubt these issues will be brought to the table in World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the world’s most problematic water-related issues.

Types of Non-Destructive Testing

The tensile-strength test is basically destructive; at the time of the process of collecting information, the sample is wasted. Although this is acceptable when a large store of the sample material exists, nondestructive methods are desirable for materials that are costly or hard to make up or that have been shaped into finished or semifinished samples.

Liquids

One tried and true nondestructive process, utilized to target surface markings and flaws in metals, uses a penetrating liquid, which needs to be visibly coloured or fluorescent. After being pasted on the surface of the sample material and set to impress into any surface markings, the dye is rubbed away, leaving readily perceptible imperfections and weaknesses. An analogous process, used for nonmetals, uses an electrically charged fluid rubbed on the material surface. After excess fluid is removed, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the surface of the sample and attracted to the cracks. Neither of these processes, however, can identify internal flaws.

Radiation

Internal, like external flaws, can be detected by X-ray or gamma-ray tests in which the radiation passes through the material and impinges on a subject photographic film. In some cases, it may be possible to nominate the X rays on a significant plane within the material, permitting a 3-dimensional perspective of the flaw identity along with its site.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of sections involves transmission of sound waves above human hearing range through the sample. Under the reflection process, a sound wave is sent from one side of the sample, reflected by the far end, and signalled onto a receiver located at the original point. By finding a mark or failure in the test sample, the sound wave is reflected and its transmission changed. The actual delay becomes a measure of the location of the crack; a map of the piece can be generated to show the location and geometry of the flaws. By the through-transmission process, the transmitter and receiver are located at the opposite sides of the sample; interruptions in the signal of the sound waves are studied to locate and measure weaknesses. Often a water medium is used by which transmitter, sample, and receiver should be immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic characteristics of a sample are largely influenced by its overall form, magnetic methods are sometimes employed to demonstrate the situation and relative size of weaknesses and marks. In magnetic testing, an apparatus is used that consists of a big coil of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Held in the first wire is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is connected an electrical measuring device. The steady current in the larger coil generates the current to move through the secondary coil by the process of induction. When an iron piece is put into the secondary coil, obvious changes in the second current can implicate defects in the bar. This process only isolates changes in sections on the length of a rod and will not locate elongated or continued flaws that readily. A parallel skill, utilizing eddy currents induced in a primary coil, also might be utilized to locate marks and cracks. A steady current is induced in part of the test material. Cracks that are found across the path of the current alter resistance of the test material; this alteration should be measured under suitable items.

Infrared

Infrared techniques have also been utilized to locate material continuity in complicated structural situations. By testing the durability of adhesive joins with the sandwich core and facing sheets with a ordinary sandwich construct material such as plywood, for example, heat is used against the surface of the sandwich skin material. In the case where bond lines are continuous, the core parts provide a heat signature in the surface object, and the localised temperatures of the skin will appear lightly along these bond lines. In the case where a bond line may be too small, gone, or erroneous, however, the local temperature does not drop. Infrared photography of the surface can then reveal the geography and dimensions of the marked adhesive. Another such method utilizes thermal coatings that can change appearance upon reaching a devised temperature.

Finally, nondestructive test methods also are now being seen to reveal a whole knowledge of the mechanical aspects of a test object. Ultrasonics and thermal techniques seem to be most reliable in this instance.
